Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. To introduce children at Idle C.E. (A) Primary School to a modern foreign language, they start to learn French; this provides a foundation for learning further languages. The language is introduced in Year 2 alongside pupils’ studies of France as part of their history and geography topic. Children learn basic conversational language as well as French songs. From Year 3, pupils are taught using the CGP Salut! scheme and resources. By Year 6 they will have covered topic areas such as describing their family, food that they enjoy and their dream jobs. Our teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
