4R Autumn Term

English in 4R

We were very excited to be reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as our Autumn 2 text! We have used this as a stimulus for our writing too, focusing on the first meeting and subsequent conversation between Lucy and Mr Tumnus. We have worked hard on writing and punctuating dialogue for this. It was important we did a good job as we invited our parents in to our very own Mr Tumnus tea party to read our work with us! They were really impressed and we had a great afternoon!

The Magic Flute

We have been learning some of the songs from the opera 'The Magic Flute' this half term. They have been challenging as the original opera was written in German but luckily we sang an English translation! We went to a schools performance at Victoria Hall in Saltaire, where we sang our songs accompanied by the Bradford Music Service Youth Orchestra! It was a fantastic morning, and made us feel really festive when the orchestra treated us to a medley of Christmas songs to round off! We had a brilliant time, and some of us have taken inspiration to learn a new musical instrument! Watch this space!

Food Technology

We had the enviable task of tasting and evaluating biscuits in our food technology! We thought about taste, texture and packaging, then used our findings to taste, evaluate and innovate shortbread! Each group chose an ingredient to add to the basic shortbread recipe, then we made shortbread and served it to our parents at our tea party! We had some great feedback from them!

The Romans come to Year 4!

We had a Roman centurian visit Year 4 for a whole day! He taught us all about how the Romans lived, dressed and fought. We even got to try on Roman armour! The armour plate was especially heavy! The centurian showed us different weapons and what the different spears were used for. We learnt about the four different jobs of Roman soldiers: building, guarding, controlling and conquering. In the afternoon we had fun making oil lamps out of clay. After that we learnt a game that Romans played, then made our own version. What a fun and interesting day we had!

Magical Christmas!

We have had a very busy and special week in the lead up to Christmas! On Monday we had our Christmas Carol concert at Holy Trinity Church which made us feel ready for the big day! Wednesday was Christmas jumper and Christmas dinner day - yummy! We followed this by meeting up with our Year 1 reading buddies for a festive read together! Thursday was our Christmas party which reportedly was the best party ever! Over the week we have been making our Steven Travers inspired Christmas cards which look amazing! We've had a brilliant Christmas week and are looking forward to the big day, and what next term brings us!
