RS Spring term

Spring 1

It has been a busy start to the year for pupils in RS.  Check out what we have been learning in Spring term!

A visit from a penguin!

Reception pupils had a very exciting start to the term as they received a letter about a missing penguin.  The letter was from a boy who needed help to find the missing animal.  The children quickly got to work making posters to help find him!  Luckily, the penguin was later captured on CCTV and he even came in to visit!

Our Reception pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning about Antarctica and developing their geographical knowledge.  Children learnt how to use maps and atlases to locate both polar regions and even began to discuss what it would be like to live in the South Pole!

Phonics and Reading

As well as reviewing sounds learnt in the autumn term, pupils in reception have been learning lots of new graphemes!  This half-term, we are learning lots of new digraphs and trigraphs.  This is where two or three letters go together to make one sound.

Reception pupils have also been busy practicing how to add and use sound buttons to support their decoding and reading.

Writing

There have been lots of exciting opportunities for writing this half-term!  After reading Lost and Found and learning all about Antarctica, pupils in reception thought about what they would need to pack for an Antarctic trip and wrote their own packing lists.  We even went on a special imaginary trip!

As we later moved on to read Meet the Oceans, reception pupils enjoyed describing and writing about different animals which live in the sea!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about different types of measurement.  We began by looking at mass and weight, before moving on to decribe and measure capacity.  We had lots of fun in the water area using different containers to describe, measure and compare capacity.

Hand to Mouth

Hand to Mouth came into school to share a special story from the Bible.  Pupils in reception enjoyed learning about Noah's Ark through Godly play.

Spring 2

In Spring 2 we have been learning a lot about animals, and have really enjoyed sharing our knoweldge of animals!

Egg Nest!

To start, we had an egg nest arrive in our classroom with 3 eggs inside. We thought about what it could be, looking for clues and we were sure it was a bird. We made lots of signs to tell people about our egg nest! After a few days of waiting they started to crack and eventually some owlets hatched out!

We learned about owls and other animals that live in a woodland, including learning about what nocturnal and hibernation mean. We read owl babies, and joined in lots with the familiar parts of the story.

Minibeasts

Next we learnt about minibeasts! Lots of the children already knew lots of facts about different minibeasts and particularly liked rhinocerous beetles! We even had some children who brought in (pretend) minibeasts to show us!

We have loved minibeast hunting outside, finding snails, worms, millipedes, woodlice, spiders and even caterpillars! We are very gentle and careful when looking after them!

We all chose a favourite minibeast to write some facts about.

We have really enjoyed reading 'What the ladybird heard' and enjoyed joining in with all the animal noises. We made maps of the farm and wrote about what animals we could see on farm.

We also talked about all the different jobs a farmer has on the farm, and looked at pictures of old and new farm machinary.

Maths

In Maths, we have been looking a lot at numbers to 10. We have explored counting amounts to 10, finding 1 more and 1 less to 10, and number bonds to 10. We have used counters and tens frames, as well as numicon.

Here is a song we listen to to help us remember our number bonds to 10!

We have also been learning the names of 3D shapes. We talked about whether they have curved or flats surface and what shape the faces on each shape are.

World Book Day

We enjoyed coming to school dressed up as our favourite book characters. We talked about our favourite books and read lots of stories throughout the day. We enjoyed going to the paper plate exhibitions and spotting stories we knew!

Art

We have been enjoying art this half term. We have worked together to make Jackson Pollock inpsired paintings collaboratively, using a range of tools for painting, including lots of items found outdoors!

We also have been exploring finger painting and printing and used this to make Mother's day cards!
