2L Autumn Term

Autumn 1

Our first week in Year 2

We had an amazing first week back where we learnt the expectations of year 2 and got to know each other and share our Flat Stanley projects.

Art

During our first week of Year 2, we explored the artist Quentin Blake and looked at a range of techniques he uses to create his art work. We then put these techniques into pratice by creating our own self-portraits. Can you guess who is who?

These will be displayed in the Link.

This half term we have looked at our class artist 'Quentin Blake'. We looked at how we can use charcoal techniques, apply texture and make different expressions in our drawing. We used these drawings to tell a story. We then used all of our knowledge so far to make our own concertina book. Look at our art work:

Our class' cairns

Worship

In our first class worship, we learnt all about a cairn and what it means to Idle C of E. We then designed our own class cairn that we take to every worship.

I have chosen this design as it represents our class and Idle's Christian values. -Archie G.

I have chosen this design because it shows courage- Lia.

I have chosen this design because it welcomes visitors- George.

History

In our history, we will be exploring Florence Nightingale and her impact on nursing in the past and today. During the first week, we discussed what we already knew about nursing and what we would see in hospitals today. We then immersed ourselves into being nurses and had a go at using some of the equipment and discussing new vocabularly.

Nurses help people who are sick- Jessica.

Equipment is new so that germs are not spread-Asees.

The thing that goes on your arm looks at your blood-Lia.

The hospitals are hygenic because people clean them and give new equipment-Archie M.

Florence Nightingale Immersion day

We had so much fun immersing ourselves into nursing in the past. We went to Scutari hospital and dressed up as nurses and porters. We acted out what nursing would have been like in the past and comparing this to nursing today. Once we got back to the classroom we created a human timeline of Florence's life and made lanterns to show Florence was the "Lady of the Lamp".

PE

In PE, we have been doing Gymnastics and looked at the different techniques to complete a log, egg and teddy bear roll.

GB Athlete Visit

We were really lucky in school to welcome Antony Cotterill for a whole school circuit where each year group were sponsered to take part in the morning. The children had to take part in different exercises on the circuit in a certain amount of time. We then learnt more about our athlete in our worship time.

Reading

Author Visit-Jenny York

We welcomed the author Jenny York into Idle CE and she shared some of her old and new books. We explored her lastest release "Walk the plank". Jenny got all year 1 and 2 involved by acting out parts of the  story. We had so much fun!  Jenny York has even given us some books to put in our reading area!

PSHE

For Hello Yellow Day, 2L have been focusing on their mental wellbeing. We all joined in by wearing yellow to raise awareness. Our morning began with some relaxing dot to dot colouring and in the afternoon we reflected on things that make us happy while enjoying our favourite songs and continuing our activities.

Sitting with my mum on the sofa makes me happy. -Esme

Seeing Thackley Jrs makes me happy-Teddy

Going in the garden makes me happy.-Rayan

Learning in school makes me happy-Ezra

Computing

In Computing, we have been looking at information technology and how it helps us. We looked at the different strands how information technology and how we might show it when using technology.

Connect:

By using video chat-Lia

By texting-Emmett

By emailing-Addison

By ringing someone-Archie M

Be Active:

We all did a Danny Go to show how we can use technology to help us be active.

Get Creative:

You can use drawing apps or games to colour in pictures-Archie G

You can use paint on the computer-Lia

Give to others:

2G sent us a nice email to say how they have used IT to help them and we gave back by sending them a nice message back.

Be mindful:

We discussed as a class that we have to manage our time online  and not go on for too long.

Music

This half term year 2 have been looking at pulse, rhythm and pitch in music with Miss Halliday. We have distinguished the difference between pulse and rhythm and practised changing our pitch in our singing. We have enjoyed dancing and singing to 'Hey Friends', learned to say 'hello' in different languages in our song 'Hello' and composed our own rhythms and played glockenspiels to the song 'Music is in my Soul'. We learned to read musical notes when we played the glockenspiels and help our friends play the correct notes as we read them out for them to the beat of the music. We then learned what a 'Rhythm Grid' is and used this to compose our own rhythms. To do this we had to learn to hold our notes/claps for the beat of 1,2,3 and 4. It was very tricky at first but we soon got the hang of it and were then able to perform our compositions in front of our friends. This is some of our learning, thhat we have done this half term:

Autumn 2

We had a lovely first week back settling in for Autumn 2. We talked about the lovely things we did in the holidays and explored what we will be doing this half term!

DT

In our first lesson of DT we explored different levers and linkages. We looked at how they move and where the lever and linkage is.

I think a light switch is a lever because it moves up and down. -Archie G

The cooking tongs have a lever at the top to make them move. -Asees

We made different linkages with card and split pins. We focussed on how they join and move together.

PSHE- World Kindness Day

To celebrate World Kindess Day, Idle joined an online assembly and explored all the different ways we can show kindness today and always.

After the assembly, we wrote a postcard to our friends and explained why we thought they were amazing.

I am going to show kindess by helping my friends when the fall over. -Prim.

I am going to show kindness by helping my partner in lessons.- Jessica

I am going to show kindess by showing respect.-Hunter.

I am going to show kindness by listening to the teachers. -Teddy

We finished the day off with the kindess song.

Christingle service-1st December

As part of celebrating the beginning to Advent, the children learnt about the meaning of a Christingle and the importance of it to Christians. In the afternoon, we went to church with our ready-made Chrsitingles and had a service all around Christingle. It was magical!

Science

In Science, we have been exploring different materials and their properties. We had to feel them, stretch, bend and test how strong they were. We then decided on which material would be the best for Santa's present sack.

The Deep-2nd December

On the 2nd December, we went to The Deep as part of our immersion to look at the different sea creatures and learn more about plastic pollution. This helped us woth key knowledge for our writing. Here are some snippets of our day:

Computing-Online Safety

As part of our Online Safety this half term we have been looking at Self-Image and Identity. We looked at different things we could do online and how these might make us feel and what we would do in response.

We answered these questions as a class:

What do you like to do online?

Watch funny videos-Lia.

Play video games with friends.-Teddy

Playing Minecraft on my Nintendo Switch.-Roman

What do you not like to do online?

Read books.-Ruby

When something goes wrong.-Eli

Who can help you if something ever worries or upsets you online?

Mum or Dad.-Jack

Teachers-Primrose.

We then looked at different scenarios and colour coded them to how they might make us feel. The children also discussed who they might tell in scenarios they feel worried, sad or scared in and what they might say.

After exploring different scenarios online, we looked at how people may look and act differently online. We discussed how people might show they are different online and why they might not want to show their physcial appearance. These were some responses:

They don't want to show their appearance online because:

There are strangers online. -Henry

They don't want to show their personal information.-Hunter

They want to be creative.-Lia

They want to be different-Ayla

We then had a go at designing our own avatars, thinking about our personal interests. We then played a game at the end to try and guess whose avatar was whose; it was very tricky!

Christmas week

We started our Christmas week with our Christmas party, we played lots of games and had some party food. We showed our best dance moves and had lots of fun!

We enjoyed our Christmas dinner with our friends and teachers.
