Autumn 1
In our first week!
We started the year by discussing our expectations and exploring what it means to be in Year 1. Together, we talked about our school values: Ready, Respectful, and Safe and shared ideas about how we can demonstrate these in our learning and play each day.
Maths
Our learning in Maths in the Autumn Term focuses on Number Sense within 10. This includes:
- Sorting and grouping objects
- Comparing numbers within 10 using 'fewer than', 'less than', 'more than', 'greater than' and 'equal to'
- Counting forwards and backwards within 10
- Using a number line from 0-10 to plot numbers and to recognise where a number would be on the number line
- Exploring part-whole models
- Deepening understanding of number bonds to 10
Writing
In Autumn Term we work through focus texts within our learning in English.
These focus texts are:
- This is Me by George Webster
- Katie in London by James Mayhew
Through this work we explore new vocabulary and how to use it appropriately, sentence structures and important grammatical components of a sentence including capital letters and full stops and word classes including verbs, nouns and adjectives.
Geography
In Geography, Year 1 are learning all about the United Kingdom and the seas that surround it. The children are finding out about the four countries that make up the UK. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and learning to name their capital cities. They are also exploring where the UK’s seas are located, using maps, globes and atlases to help them understand more about our country and the world around us.
