Maths

This half term our focus is fractions. We will be comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. After that we will multiply and subract fractions with different denominators and learn to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.

English

Our class reader this half term is The Curse of the Maya by Johnny Pearce and Andy Lonfrahan. We follow Verity and Ethan to Guatamala as they accompany their father on an archaeological journey of discovery. We will describe the rainforest setting they are launched into, and write a narrative of their temple exploration including accurately punctuated speech. To enable us to do this we will research Maya temples and make formal presentations using our speaking and listening skills alongside out computing skills.


Reading

We have begun studying Wonder by R.J Palacio and are honing our retrieval, and summarising skills before developing our inference skills. We wilol be learning to extract information from a text and use it to formulate our own ideas about characters and plot lines. All the while, we will be practising SAT style questions in preparation for May 2026.

The Ancient Maya Civilisation

In History we are studying the impact of the Maya Civilisation, an ancient people who lived in Central America 1100BC-1500AD. In English we have become immersed in the rainforest of Guatamala, made our own Maya death masks and written a short narrative with suspense and atmospehere. In History we have learned about Maya villages including pyramids and temples and the Maya number system and alphabet. We had fun attenpting to write our names and dates of birth using the highly complex ans sophisticated glyphs. 

History educational visit

We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Diane, a renowned Maya archaeologist, to our school for an engaging and educational session on the fascinating world of the ancient Maya civilization. Students had the unique opportunity to explore Maya history, culture, and achievements through Dr. Diane’s expert insights and captivating stories from her fieldwork. The session sparked curiosity and inspired a deeper appreciation for archaeology and the rich heritage of the Maya people. It was an unforgettable experience that brought history to life!
