Spring 1
It has been a busy start to the spring term for pupils in Reception. Check out some of the things we have been learning!
A Lost Penguin!
We had a very exciting start to the term when we received a letter about a missing penguin. The letter was from a boy who needed our help to find the missing animal. We quickly got to work making posters and signs to help find him. Our hard-work paid off when we captured the penguin on our CCTV camera and he later decided to visit!
Pupils in reception thoroughly enjoyed learning about Antarctica. Children developed their geographical knoweldge and skills by using atlases and globes to locate the region. They even began to discuss what it would be like to live there and how it would be different to life in the UK!
Phonics and Reading
As well as reviewing sounds learnt in the autumn term, pupils in reception have been learning lots of new graphemes! This half-term, we are learning lots of new digraphs and trigraphs. This is where two or three letters go together to make one sound.
Reception pupils have also been busy practicing how to add and use sound buttons to support their decoding and reading.
Writing
After reading Lost and Found and learning all about Antarctica, pupils in reception thought about what they would need to pack for an Antarctic trip and wrote their own packing lists!
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning all about different types of measurement. We began by looking at mass and weight, before moving on to decribe and measure capacity. We had lots of fun in the water area finding out which container had the greatest capacity!
A visit from Hand to Mouth
Kezia, from the Christian charity Hand to Mouth, came into school to share a special story from the Bible. Pupils in reception enjoyed learning about Noah's Ark through Godly play. After the session, children had time to discuss the story and responded the teachings of the story by creating pictures and even building their own ark!
