RB Spring Term

Spring 1

It has been a busy start to the spring term for pupils in Reception.  Check out some of the things we have been learning!

A Lost Penguin!

We had a very exciting start to the term when we received a letter about a missing penguin.  The letter was from a boy who needed our help to find the missing animal.  We quickly got to work making posters and signs to help find him.  Our hard-work paid off when we captured the penguin on our CCTV camera and he later decided to visit!

Pupils in reception thoroughly enjoyed learning about Antarctica.  Children developed their geographical knoweldge and skills by using atlases and globes to locate the region.  They even began to discuss what it would be like to live there and how it would be different to life in the UK!

Phonics and Reading

As well as reviewing sounds learnt in the autumn term, pupils in reception have been learning lots of new graphemes!  This half-term, we are learning lots of new digraphs and trigraphs.  This is where two or three letters go together to make one sound.

Reception pupils have also been busy practicing how to add and use sound buttons to support their decoding and reading.

Writing

After reading Lost and Found and learning all about Antarctica, pupils in reception thought about what they would need to pack for an Antarctic trip and wrote their own packing lists!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about different types of measurement.  We began by looking at mass and weight, before moving on to decribe and measure capacity.  We had lots of fun in the water area finding out which container had the greatest capacity!

A visit from Hand to Mouth

Kezia, from the Christian charity Hand to Mouth, came into school to share a special story from the Bible.  Pupils in reception enjoyed learning about Noah's Ark through Godly play.  After the session, children had time to discuss the story and responded the teachings of the story by creating pictures and even building their own ark!

Spring 2

This half-term, pupils in Reception will be learning all about plants, wildlife and minibeasts!  It has been an exiciting start to half-term so far!

Owl Babies!

We returned after the half-term break to an exciting arrival of eggs!  The eggs were in a nest surrounded by twigs, leaves and feathers.  We quickly began trying to work out what type of animal they could belong to.  We discussed and looked at lots of different types of birds including eagles, robins, seagulls and owls!

We thought carefully about how to look after the eggs and made signs asking people to be careful, quiet and gentle near the nest!

We discovered that the eggs belonged to an owl and we enjoyed reading the Owl Babies story.  We had lots of fun researching and learning about owls before writing some of our very own owl facts!

Phonics and Reading

In Phonics, we have been reviewing and learning lots of new graphemes.  We are enjoying finding our new graphemes as read as well as writing them in our work.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about Length, Height and Time.  We've had lots of opportunties to describe length and height and even enjoyed using rulers and tape-measures to check the height of our models and objects around the classroom!  We particualrly enjoyed describing our own height and comparing with each other.

We are currently focusing on numbers 9 and 10.  We have explored different representations of the numbers and even made some of our own.  We are beginning to think about how to make numbers 9 and 10 and have started to learn some of our number bonds to 10.

Art

RB have been enjoying lots of painting and printing activties over the past few weeks.  We've been learning about the artisit Jaxon Pollock and describing his artwork.  We learnt that not all artists draw and paint objects they can see infront of them. We began to explore what is meant by abstract and figuartive.

We've enjoyed painting and printing with different tools such as our hands and fingers.  We even made some natural paintings outside by mixing soil and water together, then using a variety of different sticks to create our artwork!
