1T Spring Term

Maths

Our learning in Maths in the Spring Term focuses on Number Sense within 20.

This includes:

  • Counting forwards and backwards within 20
  • Using a number line from 0-20 to plot numbers and to recognise where a number would be on the number line
  • Exploring the use of tens and ones with a variety of concrete resources including base 10
  • Addition and subtraction within 20

What 1T pupils say about Maths:

"We've been learning number bonds to 20 and trying to get to 20 by doing our little jumps." - Ismay

"On our maths game we were making number bonds to 20." - William

"We play Hit the Button to go to number bonds to 10 first and then you said if we practised we could do to 20 and we nearly beat our high score!" - Henry

English

In Spring Term we are writing the next part of the Oh No, George! story, before moving on to write a recount of a local walk which links to our learning in Geography.

Through this work we explore new vocabulary and how to use it appropriately, sentence structures and important grammatical components of a sentence including capital letters and full stops and word classes including verbs, nouns and adjectives.

What 1T pupils say about English:

"In English we do our handwriting and songs like one from the left and one from the right." - Amelia

"I like doing handwriting and practising capital letters and lower case letters. It's really fun and pretty cool." - Elijah

"It's fun doing English because you get to learn about all the sounds and it helps with Phonics which graphemes and we learn all about full stops and questions and we've been learning about question marks." - Arthur

Wider Curriculum

Spring 1:

In Science we are focusing on classifying and grouping animals and 1T have astounded me with their understanding of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish and how we differentiate between them. We had a very sepcial visit from Clyde the tortoise too as part of our learning about reptiles, and Stanley the school dog has made guest appearances too!

In Geography we are studying our local area, Idle, and planning a local fieldwork walk during which we will identify and discuss human and physical geographical features.

In Art we have learnt about the work of Clarice Cliff and have been developing our understanding of mixing primary colours to make secondary colours of a variety of hues.

In Computing we are learning how to program a robot which involves thinking about directions and which buttons to press in what order.

ISpring 2:

In History we are learning about Idle in the past, including the Jowett brothers who manufactured cars and had their factory in Idle. First we are learning about Idle and how it has changed over time and then we will learn more about the Jowett brothers and their cars.

In DT we are working on our 'Wheels and Axels' unit. Through this we are beginning to understand which things have wheels and why, how wheels and axels fit together and move and what problems we might encounter and how we can fix them.

What 1T pupils say about our wider curriculum:

""I've enjoyed making cars in DT." - Harriet

"We've been learning about the Easter story in RE." - Harvey

"I like learning about the Jowett brothers in English and History." - Hellie

"I was enjoying making the cars and deciding what to use and designing it." - Oliver

"I like drama and science and history and RE and English and DT." - Ezra

"In Art we've been making plates inspired by Clarice Cliff." - Rosie
