Summer Term
Welcome to Summer Term in 5M!
Reading
After reading an extract of 'Resist' by Tom Palmer in reading lessons last term, the children in 5M wanted to know the rest of Edda's story. So alongside our class novel 'When The Sky Falls' by Phil Earle, we read Resist.
Resist: One girl's fight back against the Nazis
As the brutal Second World War stretches on with no end in sight, life for ordinary Dutch people in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands is fraught with peril and hardship. There is very little to eat and the population lives under the constant threat of arrest and enslavement.
After the murder of her beloved uncle and the capture of her brother by the Germans, Edda is determined to do anything she can to help the resistance fight back against their oppressors. But what can a teenage girl do and how much risk is she willing to take?
Award-winning author Tom Palmer shines a light on the incredible work of the WWll Dutch resistance, in a story inspired by the childhood of Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn.
We spent some time researching other details about Audrey Hepburn before drafting and writing an autobiography of her life during our English lessons.
History
In history, we have introduced a brand new topic to our curriculum called 'Peace in Bradford'. We started by discussing our ideas about peace, looking at different symbols and we came up with our own definitions of peace. We found out that Bradford is a City of Sanctuary and a City of Peace, one of only two in the UK.
We considered where in the world people have migrated from to settle in Bradford and how that has contributed to a multicultural and multifaith society. Pupils discussed the question, 'Has Bradford always been peaceful?' Children thought that VE Day was the start of peace following two World Wars and learned that there had been two occasions when there were riots in the city since then. We found out that community and faith groups work hard to make sure lessons were learned after the riots.
