Autumn 1
Our first week in Year 2!
We started with our expectations and understanding what it looks like to be in Year 2. We discussed our school rules of ready, respectful and safe and what we would need to do to show this.
Art
We then focussed on producing our self portraits for our whole school art project where we explored the artist Quentin Blake. We observed his art work and then had a go at recreating our own pieces using his strategy to create eyes, noses and mouths. We then used the skills to draw our self portrait in the style of Quentin Blake. Take a look at the results!
We have continued our art looking at different materials. The second we have looked at is charcoal. We practiced using the charcoal techniques to create texture and shape. We used our observational drawing to then put our techniques into practice and draw objects around the classroom.
My favourite part was using the charcoal to make the marks. - Jodie
I loved when we did the sketching of the apple. - Poppy-Mae
I loved the texture hunt when we found the textures around the room. I used the radiator. - Ismay
I like when we lightly went over objects in the classroom to find patters and textures. - Gabe
History
In our history we will be exploring Florence Nightingale and her impact on the nursing world. During the first week we explored what we already knew about nursing and what we would see in a hospital today. We had a go at using some equipment and discussing new vocabulary.
The hospitals are hygienic because the cleaners clean them. - Rosie
Equipment is new and clean - Stanley
Nurses look after people who are sick and broken their arm. - Piper
They have lots of equipment to look after people. - Charlie
Florence immesion day
We had a day learning all about Florence and who she is and her impact. We spent the day acting out her role in healthcare and her influence in the Crimean War. We also made our own lamps as we found out Florence used to walk round the hospitals at night and earned the name 'The Lady with the lamp'.
I had courage when I was helping Stanley who was a soldier and even though the bandages were tricky to put on. - Willow
I liked when i was the head porter who had to carry all the beds for soldiers and all the equipment the nurses would need. - Henry
I enjoyed being a soldier - Ishaaq
I showed courage in cleaning because it was a very dirty hospital but i kept going to make it clean for Florence. - Ernie
I showed love when I helped Henry the head porter by following his instructions. - Amelia
Maths
In our maths we have been exploring place value of number. We have been looking at how many tens and ones are in each number and making this using different manipulatives. We have used place value charts and part-whole models with base 10 to make and partition numbers.
I know that 32 has 3 tens and 2 ones. - Piper
74 has 7 lots of 10 and 4 ones. - Isaac
The tens are on the left and the ones are on the right. - Henry
56 is bigger that 23 because it has 5 tens and 23 has 2 tens. - Rosie

Hello Yellow Day - World Mental Health Day
On Friday 10th October, it was world mental health day. To celebrate and acknowledge this at school we all wore yellow and completed activities that allowed us to identify feelings. We had discussion around what to do when were not feeling okay and who we could talk to. We also completed some activities that allowed us to share what makes us happy, and completed some mindful colouring whilst listening to mindful music to feel a sense of peace. We shared stories around feelings, learnt how to regulate ourself with breathing techniques and counting things in our surroundings to help us when we need.
Computing
In our computing we have been understanding what IT stands for and how to correct use it. We have discovered different used of IT and learned about the digit diet of 5 a day. The digit diet includes using IT for different uses including: connecting, being active, getting creative, give to tohers and being mindful.
We discussed and took part in each of the different areas.
Connecting - We sent an email to 2L to share our learning in computing.
Being active - We had a go at danny go and got our heart rates pumping.
Getting creative - We all had a go at using IT to be creative with the draw design.
Give to others - We sent a message to our families to share a weekend message.
Being mindul - We share how often we should be using IT.
Music
Miss Haliday has been teaching us music this half term. We have been looking at pulse, rhythm and pitch in music. We have distinguished the difference between pulse and rhythm and practised changing our pitch in our singing. We have enjoyed dancing and singing to 'Hey Friends', learned how to say 'hello' in different languages in our song 'Hello' and composed our own rhythms and played glockenspiels to the song 'Music is in my Soul'. We learned to read musical notes when we played the glockenspiels and help our friends play the correct notes as we read them out for them to the beat of the music. We then learned what a 'Rhythm Grid' is and used this to compose our own rhythms. To do this we had to learn to hold our notes/claps for the beat of 1,2,3 and 4. It was very tricky at first but we soon got the hang of it and were then able to perform our compositions in front of our friends.
