Florence Nightingale Visits Idle CE

You would not believe who visited Idle CE Primary School on the 26th September! Year 2 were extremely lucky and were able to welcome Florence Nightingale to help them consolidate and extend their learning about events beyond living memory and the life of a significant individual.

The Florence Nightingale workshop, delivered by staff from Thackery Medical Museum, allowed pupils to learn more about Florence and how nursing has changed over time. During the workshop pupils learnt about Florence’s family and her early life before exploring a timeline of her life. With a focus on the Crimean War, pupils were able to think about the experiences Florence, her team of nurses and porters had on their journey to the Crimea and while they were there and consider challenges that Florence faced being a female nurse.

Pupils were able to explore artefacts from the time, including medical instruments, carbonic soap amongst other things and really see how things have progressed since then.
