Maths

This term, Year 6 pupils are focusing on fractions. They will learn how to add and subtract fractions, even when the denominators are different, and explore equivalent fractions to understand how fractions relate to each other. These skills build a strong foundation for problem-solving and real-life applications, such as measuring and dividing quantities.

History

This term, Year 6 have been exploring the fascinating world of the ancient Mayan civilization. They’ve learned how the Mayans developed advanced farming techniques to thrive in challenging environments, and discovered the intricate glyph writing system used to record their history and culture. Pupils have also investigated the Mayan number system, which included the concept of zero long before many other civilizations. To bring history to life, they even studied the traditional ball game Pok-a-Tok, understanding its cultural significance and the role it played in Mayan society.

RE

In RE, Year 6 have been exploring the big question: Are the ideas of science and creation conflicting or complimentary? Pupils have examined different viewpoints, considering how scientific explanations like the Big Bang and evolution compare with religious beliefs about creation. Through discussion and debate, they’ve learned that some people see these ideas as opposing, while others believe they can work together to provide a fuller understanding of the world. This topic encourages critical thinking and respect for diverse perspectives.

Alongside this, pupils will focus on writing dialogue between characters, using speech to move the story forward and reveal character relationships. These activities help children practise using punctuation accurately, vary sentence structure, and write creatively with purpose.
