Summer term

Maths.

In Y6 we have completed units on Posistion and Direction and Shape in preparation for KS2 SATs. We re-visited coordinates and quadrants before mastering reflections and translations. Next, we completed a unit on angels in shapes including: quadrilaterals, triangles and polygons. We learned rules around angles in a right angle, a straight line, a circle and opposite angles and used these rules to calculate missing angles in a range of shapes. We then revised the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages and time to make sure we were ready for KS2 SATs. It was wonderful to see how confident the Y6 pupils had become and to hear them using mathematical vocabulary to explain their understanding.

English

In English we have read Pig-Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. We discussed the msain character's argument that a pig-heart was better than no heart at all and thought about the ethics behind xenotransplantation. We wrote a biography of Cameron using all the informaiton we had gathered from the text. We read daily and used expression and intonation to bring the many varied characters to life. This was a great example of reading for pleasure.

RE

We have completed a unit of work called, What Would Jesus Do. We read The Sermon on the Mount and identified how Christians today are putting Jesus' teachings into practise by helping those in need. We learned about CHristian Aid and The Leprosy Mission and then researched other charitable organisations to identify the good work they were doing to help the most needy people around the world.

Science

In Science we have become real life medics, studying a unit about The Double Circulatory System. With the help of a real life paramedic who visited us in class, we have developed our understanding of how our heart, lungs and blood work to carry oxygen to every cell in our bodies. It was fascinating. We even made our own salt-dough and sculpted models of hearts which we labelled.
