We welcomed the children back after Easter with some interesting clues in our English lessons, can you guess what we will be learning about this half term?
English
In English, we had some clues that we looked at and we imagined we were working in a mill during Victorian times. We then worked out what some of these clues might have meant.
Our Clues
-a burnt letter that said that conditions in the mill couldn't continue.
-a pair of glasses that said "for the worsted fibres".
-property of Salts Mill sign
-a model of a house and furniture
-cotton wool
DT
In DT this half term, we are looking at structures for a Saltaire lion. In our first lesson we looked at the different types of chairs and their properties. We then tested different structure shapes and materials.
May Day
Our History and English learning this term has focused on Titus Salt and the village of Saltaire. We visited Saltaire to explore what Titus Salt built and to understand why he designed the village in this way. During our walk around the village, we followed a route to see how close the different buildings were to one another and why the layout of Saltaire was so important. This helped us understand how Saltaire was a huge improvement compared to the overcrowded areas in other parts of Bradford.
As part of our English work, we read the book “Titus Salt and How He Built Saltaire”. This helped us develop our understanding even further. We also completed an information hunt to learn more about the different areas and buildings within Saltaire.
Each child was then given a bookmark featuring a person who lived during the time of Titus Salt. We worked together to find the house where each person lived, helping us imagine what life was like during that period. We also visited the statue of Titus Salt and discussed why he is still remembered as such an important figure today.
